Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) takes away your personality if you let it create content for you. A fundamental rule of writing is “be yourself”. But you cannot be yourself if you depend on artificial intelligence (AI) for writing. What is generative artificial intelligence (GenAI)? “Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new content, such as text, images, audio, and video.”
Because of ease and convenience, many people (including professionals) turn to GenAI to write content for them. In the process, they shelve their creativity and distinctiveness. And GenAI strips people of their intrinsic abilities and unique personalities. A piece of writing ought to have a human quality. It identifies the writing style of that person, for people differ in how they write—what kinds of sentences they use, what punctuation marks they prefer, and what sort of tone they exude. All these traits identify the particular writer’s personality and style of writing. As people are recognizable when they speak, so they are when they write. Their personal identities are engraved in their writing styles.
GenAI content writing tools take away all those traits and human qualities. As a result, people lose their writing voice (writing voice is the unique style of the particular writer). A writer’s voice is innate to the particular writer (a writer can be anyone who produces a piece of prose or poetry, although the word “writer” is often reserved for professional writers). To reiterate, a writer should be recognizable through his or her words. Readers familiar with some writers’ writings will easily understand their styles and personalities. Conversely, machine-produced content obscures and masks the human style and taste.
If people believe in their writing abilities, they will gradually improve their writing skills and become better writers as time goes on. Nobody can write polished content for the first time, except machines, of course. Being dependent on generative AI for content means losing one’s unique style, and that person’s writing style cannot be consistent. That person may write an article in one style today, but will produce another article differently tomorrow. And that is because of the AI usage. Machines mimic humans but cannot be humans.
It might be okay to use GenAI for organizing and outlining content, but it is unbecoming of people to rely on AI to write articles, tweets, or Facebook messages. The reason being, AI content writing tools deprive people of their God given unique style of writing, so it is imperative to stay away from them.
